Why are my dog's red, brown thigh spots not improving with shampoo?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Hi, I have an 6-year old chihuahua/papillon mix. A week ago I noticed something odd about his skin (inner thigh/groin). It was a bit red and maybe swollen, there are these weird little brown specks (not sure how to describe them). I took him to the vet who wasn't sure what this is but gave me Malaseb shampoo. I have washed my dog twice with it but the skin doesn't seem any better. The broblem is only on one side, the other side of his leg/belly is fine. Do you have any idea what this could be?

It's a little odd that it is only on one side of the belly/leg. The rust color looks like saliva staining from your dog licking more frequently. The brown spots are likely clogged pores. I would work with your vet to treat itching (making sure he is on a good-quality flea preventative), food allergies, atopy, etc. You can also ask for a benzoyl peroxide dog shampoo to help flush the pores.
