Updated On September 23rd, 2025

My dog is 56 days pregnant and today I noticed mucus coming out of her vagina could this be a sign of labour? She’s also been sleeping and laying down most of the day

Hello. Yes, this is a clear sign that you girl is entering the first stages of pregnancy. Often after the appearance of the mucous, she may enter active labor in the next 1-3 days. She is getting very close! Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.

It sounds like she is getting ready to head into labor if she is licking herself and panting. A mucus discharge is normal, but if the discharge is a greenish/brown, that is a sign the placenta has ruptured, and she will need to see a vet immediately. I would take her temperature rectally, and once it drops below 100F, she will deliver puppies within 24 hours. If 24 hours pass after the temperature drop with no sign of puppies, you will need to take her into the vet right away.

IT seems like she is going into labour indeed, if she is 56 days it's a little early so this might be indicative of a problem. generally speaking once those signs start you should usually expect the puppies to start coming out within 2-4 hours, if it takes longer than that please contact your veterinarian.

Yes, it is possible that Flossy is going into labor. I would take her temperature rectally. A dog's normal temperature is between 38.3-39.2C, and once it drops below 37.7C, she will give birth to puppies within 24 hours. Should 24 hours pass after this temperature drop with no sign of puppies, she will need to see a vet immediately.
