Does early neutering increase UTI risk or stones in male cats?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Persian | Male | unneutered | 5 months and 11 days old | 4.85 lbs

Hi!! Is there an increased risk of getting urinary track infection and urinary stones after neuturing a male cat at younger age? My vet told it is good to wait untill pelly is 1year to avoid such risk. Another vet told to get him operated at 6months. What is the best to do for him. Thanks!!

It is speculation that early neutering causes urinary issues. There has been no proven correlation. I suggest you have him neutered between 6 and 8 months of age. Urinary issues in male cats are due to stress, diet and not drinking enough water- those correlations have been proven.
