My dog escaped and has wounds on her mouth. What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed

My dog River got out of my back yard the other day and when she came home she had wounds on both sides of her mouth. I live in the country so im not sure what would have caused this or what i should do to treat it. I attached pictures of both sides of her face.

Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Those wounds look concerning for a chemical or thermal burn, but could be wounds from a fight. I strongly recommend a visit to the vet, as she might have wounds inside her mouth as well, and if she drank something corrosive might have a problem in her stomach as well. Either way, those look painful, and look like they might require antibiotics, especially if they are wounds from a fight. These you will need to get from the vet. At home human medications are not safe for dogs so do not give any human medications. Best of luck with River, I hope she feels better soon!
