What's causing my dog's scaly, crusty hair loss on his back?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 2 years and 4 months old | 35 lbs

My 12 year old dog has a large (silver dollar-sized) spot on his back where his hair is gone and it’s scaly and crusty. Any help would be appreciated. Photos attached. Thank you.

I am sorry to hear about your concern for Luke. We can see patches of hair loss such as this from a variety of causes, ranging from allergies, bacterial infection of the skin, insect bites that got very inflammed, wounds, or a fungal infection called ringworm. I would recommend having Luke examined by a vet to make sure this isn't ringworm https://veterinarypartner.vin.com/default.aspx?pid=19239&id=4951439 as it can be passed to people. Be sure to wash your hands after touching the area just in case, until you can have him seen.
