My dog's bandaged tail wound is leaking. Is it blood or infection?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

My dog fractured his tail and had an open wound at the tip so I took him to the vet, bandaged him up and 5 days later there's some sort of liquid past the bandages on his actual tail and I'm not sure what it could be. Blood? Or something else? It's on the bandage as well.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It is difficult to know just based on a picture though I am suspicious that this may be an infection. Even if it just blood, it would still be indicated to proceed with a recheck with your veterinarian so that the bandage can be removed and the wound looked at more closely. Then they would be able to recommend therapy accordingly. Best of luck!
