Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Eating soft food only is not concerning. An occasional cat treat is also not concerning. Soft stools could be from the soft foods- they contain more water- but if the stools are more like diarrhea, I would recommend looking into the cause. There could be a medical reason for diarrhea, like parasites or a digestive issue that needs to be addressed. If he used to eat hard food and now only eats soft I would recommend having a vet look at his teeth to make sure there isn’t something painful going on that’s causing the diet change. I hope this helps, if not please repost with a specific question. Good luck and kisses to Koda!

I would recommend taking a stool sample in to be tested by your veterinarian to check for parasites as the dewormer you gave does not cover every parasite out there. Once the stool is tested, go from there for further testing. If you recently switched the diet, try transitioning to a different diet. In younger animals, diet or intestinal parasites are common causes of soft stool / diarrhea. I hope this helps!

Hello. Everything looks very good here, & I think your vet did an excellent job steering you to the RC GI diet. An occasional soft stool is very acceptable under the circumstances, so I would not change the food unless the stools become very soft again on a regular basis. If they do, you might talk to your vet about trying a trial of the medication, Cerenia. This is used primarily for nausea & vomiting , but anecdotally, it seems to help in some chronic diarrhea cases by decreasing inflammation. I would not use it now because things sound to be well in check, just keep this in mind. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.

Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to address your concern! Soft stool can be caused by many things and most commonly the diet and intestinal bacteria play an important role. I typically recommend adding in a probiotic such as Purina Fortiflora for cats and give this 1-2 weeks. If there is no improvement, I recommend switching to a different diet to see if this helps. I would give the new diet about 4 weeks before giving up and trying other alternatives. If the stool remains consistently soft after the probiotic and diet trial, I would recommend having a veterinarian examine Theodore for further testing / treatment recommendations. There are prescription diets such as hydrolyzed protein diets that Theodore could be put on to see if the soft stool responds to a hypoallergenic diet. I hope this helps! Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns.
