Hamster losing face hair after sticky eye: Is it from rubbing?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Small Animal | Hamster | Male | unneutered | 2 lbs

My 2 1/2 year old Syrian is having trouble with hair loss on his face, especially his left side. He was having problems with sticky eye on that side, and although that doesn't seem to be bothering him now, the hair loss is still there. Could the hair loss be a result of the attention I gave to the sticky eye (could he be rubbing it too much, etc), his older age, or something else? Added pictures tho he was half asleep and can't say he appreciated it

Thanks for reaching out about Finn and including photos. The hair loss is probably due to rubbing the face, due to an eye problem. A veterinary visit is probably recommended to assess and provide a diagnostic/treatment plan. Ocular infections are common in hamsters, due to corneal trauma, dental disease and upper respiratory diseases. Good luck.
