My dog is breathing hard, gurgling, and in pain. Is it serious?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | American Staffordshire Terrier | Female | 8 years and 1 month old | 85 lbs

My 8 year old f Stafford shire terrier suddenly started breathing laboured and a bit gurgle in the throat a couple hours ago! It seems like shes taking shorter, quicker breathes asif it hurts to breathe in deep. Her nose is dry but not super dry but definitely not wet as per normal! I'm worried I'm not going to lie but could it be just a cold or something big? Is there anything I can do from home right now to help? Steam in a closed bathroom? Or would that make it worse?I'm grateful for any info

Hello. In an older dog that suddenly develops any type of labored breathing, my first thought is a cardiopulmonary problem. Dogs just do not get colds. I would highly recommend having Nimoosh seen as soon as possible. If this is her heart, time is important. I do hope Nimoosh is alright & thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach
