Puppy has parvo. Can an emergency vaccine save my other dog?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Female | unspayed | 7 years and 6 months old | 45 lbs

I just had a puppy diagnosed with parvo today. I've had him 2 days and I'm afraid my german shepherd might get sick. If I give her a parvo shot today what is the chances she'll not get it?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! That is not how vaccines work unfortunately. Vaccines require the immune system of the vaccinated patient to mount a response which may take a few weeks. By that time, parvovirus is unlikely to be in your pup's system. The best thing would be to separate them for at least 3 weeks until everything clears on your pup and make sure your German Shepherd does not have contact with your pup. Best of luck!
