I found a pigeon that can't fly and seems injured. What should I do?

Help There is a pigeon who cannot fly and he is standing still. He blinks a lot and sometimes closes his eyes for a few seconds then opens them again. He doesn’t move much. What should I do?

A veterinary consultation would be essential to determine if there is any broken wing or major trauma, which is affecting his ability to fly and move. I would strongly suggest to take him to your local veterinary practice.

Hello. The pigeon could just be dazed from a bump to the head, or could have broken wings or damage internally. I would recommend putting some bird seed and water with her, and placing her in a safe place outside, and see if she flies away after 12-24 hours. If not I would take her to a vet.

It would be best to try and find a local wildlife rescue near you, or if one isn't available, a local veterinarian to take a look at the bird and assess its injuries. Wildlife centers are best equipped to help properly care for the injured bird and re-released it back into the wild once it's healthy. Keeping the bird in a quiet, dark, cool location is best until you can get care to help reduce stress and strain on its body.

Differentials are many, from gastrointestinal diseases (infection/inflammations often dietary related) to any disease that can spread systemically (causing lethargy for example) like infection, and anything that can cause pain/discomfort. An immediate check up at your local veterinarian is essential to confirm these clinical suspicions and treat appropriately. Antibiotics may be needed. If you suspect Peji has a broken wing it would be best to take her to a vet in your area. They can take an X-ray to see if the wing is broken and can help create a cast or bandaging as needed to help it heal properly. It's possible the bird may be injured or ill. If he still doesn't recover, even after eating and drinking and resting some, it is a good idea to contact a local wildlife rehab in your area. They may be able to come get the bird (or have you bring him to them) so he can be examined, treated for any issues, and safely re-released.

IT is a very young bird who probably doesn't know how to fly yet, he might be injured or sick as well but this is very difficult to know without running some lab tests. ideally you should look for a nest in one of the trees in your yard or maybe in some other high place, putting him back there if you find it might be his best chance of survival.

Thanks for reaching out about your pigeon. Egg binding is a common cause for inability to utilize the legs, if an egg is still in the uterus or has damaged a nerve while passing. A veterinary visit is recommended to assess and provide a diagnostic/treatment plan. If can not stand, remove perches and provide a soft towel on which to sit. Ensure that food and water are easily accessible. Review diet to include vitamins and minerals, best in the form of fresh vegetables. Good luck.

You can continue with salvon only, try to get a hold of some baytril syrup (pet shop or vet), this is an antibiotic that you can put in his water. It's very important to check if the wing is broken or not, if it is broken it means this pigeon will not be able to return to fly, which means you will either have to keep him or to have him put to sleep.

I think it would be a good idea to bring Doug to the vet to rule out any possible health issues and make sure he's doing OK. If he's a wild dove, you may also want to contact a local wildlife rehab center in your area that may be able to take him and properly care for him until he can be released back into the wild.

It would be best to try and bring the bird to your vet ASAP to have it treated as the eye and beak both look like there may be a pox or other sort of infection irritating it. You can use a clean washcloth to remove any debris from the eye to help keep it open and more comfortable. Making sure to keep the bird away from any other pets or people is also a good idea to prevent the spread of any illness until it can be treated by your vet.
