Can I see a foreign object in my dog's eye? When do corneal scratch signs appear?

Question

If my dog got something in her eye, would I be able to see the object by pulling her eyelids back? And if she scratched her cornea, how many hours later would symptoms usually appear? Thanks! Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | unspayed | 1 year and 4 months old | 20 lbs

You may not be able to see a foreign object if it gets trapped behind the third eyelid. Signs of a corneal scratch will begin as soon as it is scratched (corneal scratches hurt). A foreign object also hurts. If Zoe is holding the eye closed, squinting or you are concerned something happened, she needs to be examined by the vet today. I hope this helps.
