My kidney cat scratches. Could it be a Royal Canin Renal food allergy?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 11 lbs

My 7 year old DSH male has stage 2 kidney disease, and eats Royal Canin Renal kibble and pouches. Over the past week has been scratching behind his ear to the point of bleeding. The vet said there was no parasites, infection or fungal infections. Everything is looking good. Except for the lesions as per the pictures. They’ve given him f10 cream. They say he must have scratched himself too hard. But I am wondering if it’s a food allergy. Could he actually be allergic to Royal Canin Renal?

Yes, it is possible this is an allergy but first I recommend to get the infection cleared up and see if it comes back. An allergy will be a chronic problem. Cats can get a random infection so it's best to clear the infection and wait to see if it becomes an ongoing problem. If it is a food allergy, switch Snowball the to Royal Canin Multifunction Renal Support + Hydrolyzed Protein. He will be able to eat this food which will support his kidneys and avoid food allergies. Best of luck.
