My dog has bladder cancer. How can I extend his life comfortably?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 37.5 lbs

My 7 year old dog was recently diagnosed with transitional cell carcinoma, with the tumour situated at the top of his urethra, basically at the opening of his bladder. He has been prescribed 5mg of Feldene each night with food. I understand that this type of cancer is very aggressive and terminal, but I'm desperate to know if I can do anything else to extend my dog's life without causing him unnecessary pain.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I am sorry to hear about the cancer diagnosis. While this cancer is unlikely to be cured, there are other strategies you could consider such as radiation therapy and/or chemotherapy which may help prolong Odie’s survival with good quality of life. I would recommend you check in with a local veterinary oncologist who can review the case and make further recommendations. Have a great day!
