Why is my dog aggressive with guests inside but not outside?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Pit Bull Terrier | Male | neutered | 1 year and 11 months old | 55 lbs

I’ve raised rosco since he was just a puppy but just recently I’ve started noticing he’s been a little aggressive towards people this come insid and he’s not normally like that. He’s perfectly fine meeting people outside of my house but if I was to bring them in my house he’s not so happy. Example: he met my sisters boyfriend OUTSIDE of my house and everything was fine he was friendly but when he came over INSIDE my house and went to pet rosco he tried nipping at him aggressively and was barking

Canine aggression is a complex behavior as it can stem from dominance, possessiveness, fear, anxiety, resource guarding or a combination. Aggression towards people is serious. It can result in injuries to humans and can end in euthanasia for the dog. I recommend to work with a professional trainer and get this problem solved quickly. Roscoe should also be neutered. It may not stop the aggression but intact males are proven to be more aggressive than neutered males. Researching on your own will also be helpful. Familiarizing yourself with canine body language and dog training can help you to recognize what your pet is trying to say. You can find many books written on the topic and there is a trainer named Victoria Stilwell who I think is particularly helpful. Best of luck.
