My healthy cat won't eat after a new person moved in. What can I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Maine Coon Polydactyl | Male | neutered | 1 year old | 10.5 lbs

I'm have a hard time getting my cat to eat. I've had a recent Vet appointment with him where he was perfectly fine and his teeth are doing well (I brush them almost daily. He doesn't have any tender spots around his mouth or hairballs. He isn't even acting sick or being less social. He's still super playful. He may be stressed to due a new person living in the house. I just can't get him to eat properly. What should I do? (Thanks for your time)

Hello, sorry to hear about Goliath. Indeed it sounds like stress may be contributing to his inadequate appetite. You may move his food bowls to a more private area and see if this helps him be more comfortable when eating. However, there are other causes for a poor appetite other than bad oral health. This may include liver disease, kidney disease, IBD, or even lower urinary tract disease. If you note any lethargy, vomiting, diarrhea, straining to urinate then he should be seen by his veterinarian immediately. Otherwise, you may attempt to modify his environment to decrease stress. This may include aerosolized diffusers such as Feliway to help make his environment more comfortable. Hope this helps and best of luck.
