Why does my kitten have an itchy rash around her nose and mouth?

My kitten (shes less than a year old, not sure exact age) has a brownish rash kind of thing around her nose and mouth and it itches to her and hurts her. she meows constantly and won't sleep because of it. What is it, and what should we do? Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Female | unspayed | 1lb

This is probably caused by an allergic reaction. first of all make sure you de-flea Frey regularly every month with a high quality spot on (ex. Advantage) as fleas are by far the most common reason for these reactions. If the fleas are not the problem, it could be an allergic reaction to food or an environmental factor. this is more complicated to treat and will sometimes require medications such as Steroids, anti histamines or cyclosporin in order to stop the allergy.
