My senior boxer has ascites & tumors. What are his comfort options?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Boxer | Male | unneutered | 13 years and 8 months old

My boxer has ascetis. Blood tests showed liver infection. X-rays and ultrasound show huge amount of fluid and numerous tumors. He lost weight because he doesn't eat. He is 13 years old. He still requires to go for walks, wags his tail and is needy as never! Please help me. My vet says there is no therapy and that he will suffer if he continues to live...

I am so sorry your pet has a terminal illness as it seems. You may be able to buy him a few more days, weeks, by having the fluid drained from his stomach periodically as it fills up. This may have to be done frequently if it fills up quickly. Also getting him on a liver protectant medication called Denamarin can help some. However, if the tumors have invaded any major vessels or arteries, then I agree that the only option is to keep him comfortable with palliative care (pain medicine, relieving the fluid, etc). I am so sorry, but it is best to keep Butch as comfortable as possible and when the time comes, to humanely let him go. Best regards.
