My budgie is leaning on one foot. Is it serious or will it heal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Bird | Parakeet | Female | unspayed | 1 month and 28 days old

Hello! I have a pet budgie that I've had since they were in an egg (still having both parents, but not in the same enclosure as the baby is now 2 months old, and had a sibling) and lately she has been leaning more towards one foot as she is sitting on a perch and on my fingers. She looks very healthy other than her leg. I was wondering if this would heal in time or if this is too serious to wait and I should just take her to the vet. Thanks.

She would need an exam and diagnosis of the underlying condition in order to say how long healing will require. If she will allow, check her leg and foot on that side for any signs of infection or injury. This may include redness, swelling, discharge or bleeding. See your veterinarian of you notice anything suspicious. Make sure the nails are trimmed. Offer different size perches as well as textured perches to promote foot health.
