Why is my cat chewing her paw? It's inflamed, dry, and painful.

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Russian Blue | Female | unspayed | 11 months and 29 days old

My cat has been chewing at her paw a lot. I felt them and noticed they are inflamed and dry. When I pressed the middle two pads she hissed and growled - something that is extremely out of character for her so I assume she is in a lot of pain. What could this be?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This may be due to an allergy, infection or inflammation for instance. It would be best to make sure that for example there is not a foreign body or something causing discomfort and possibly an infection and pain. I recommend you have her evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. They would be able to check for this possibilities and treat accordingly. Have a good night!
