My dog has seizures. When should I start seizure medication?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Beagle | Male | neutered

Hello, I have a beagle who is around 7 almost 8 years old, and there are periods of time where he gets seizures randomly. Today, for example, he's had 2 in the span of about 5 hours. He gets them randomly though. There is no pattern that I have noticed that the seizures happen in. My question is, should I put him on medication or some type of treatment? I've taken him to a vet before and they said they didn't recommend medication because the seizures didn't happen too often.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Rocco. I typically start seizure medications when the seizures are occurring every 4-6 weeks. I will also start meds if the seizures seem to becoming longer in duration, most intense or if the pet is having difficulty recovering from an episode. I hope this information helps!
