Dog ate human food, stomach swollen. Is it bloat? How long to watch?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Czechoslovakian Vlcak | Male | unneutered | 9 months and 6 days old | 70 lbs

Hello, my dumb brother left on the table two pizzas, some pankakes and mashed potatoes and my Czechoslovakian Wolfdog ate them all. I came home three hours later and found him with his stomach swollen but showing no other symtom of bloat, he is now sleeping. What are the chances that all that food will cause a bloat? How long should I keep watch? Sorry, I'm obviously no expert.

Sounds like he has "food bloat" - just a really full stomach and not the typical bloat you hear about where the stomach flips on itself. I suggest, since he is resting comfortably, the following: 1. Absolutely NO exercise for 24 hours. Only walk outside ON A LEASH to use the bathroom and then back inside. Dogs with full stomachs that run around have an increased chance of flipping the stomach and then it becomes the bad type of bloat! 2. No food for 24 hours but access to water is fine. 3. Monitor closely for any signs of distress (trying to vomit but nothing is coming up would be the main one) - if you notice that it is an emergency and he needs to see a vet ASAP. Hope this helps. If you have more questions you can always opt for a private consultation where we can chat back and forth. That way you can ask as many questions as you'd like. Best wishes.
