Why is my older cat's skin peeling and tearing on his back?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 13.5 lbs

This is the third of these our cat has had in three months in different locations on his back/sides. The vet stitched it up twice and did tests. They also tested nodules he gets for cancer and they were negative. The nodules seem to be a separate issue and were not present on the spots that opened up. They came to no conclusion except to say some cats get this as they get older. He is about 11 years old. We have been checking him daily & this appeared today. It looks like skin peeled back.

My best guess based on all the history you provided is that Sausage has Feline Skin Fragility Syndrome - often happens due to an underlying illness like diabetes, Cushing's disease, etc. Here is a link to an article about this problem. I suggest you consult with your vet about this as a possible diagnosis. ( https://www.petmd.com/cat/conditions/skin/c_ct_feline_skin_fragility_syndrome ) Hope this helps. Best wishes.
