My dog won't drink water after being sick. How to get him to drink?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 1 year and 3 months old | 40 lbs

My dog isn't drinking water. He had vomiting a few days ago & got fluids from vet. Then he had diarrhea. His appetite is great, still peeping, seems almost himself just slightly more lethargic. Been sneaking water into his food, but he is totally uninterested in drinking on his own

Hello. I would not be too concerned. Just continue to add water, or low sodium broth to his food. You can also offer him broth or stock ( either beef or chicken ) as a source of liquids. He might find this very appealing. If his appetite is great, he will probably start drinking soon. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
