Dog's spay incision bleeding, vet closed. How to prevent infection?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Female | spayed | 3 years and 5 months old | 64.3 lbs

Hello, my dog got spayed on Thursday and the vet told me she had hurt herself and opened her cut a bit but that she would be fine. Today while I took my dog outside for her to use the restroom I saw she had some blood on her cut and I wanted to know what to do because the vet in not opened today or tomorrow and I don’t want her cut to be infected.

Keep an e-collar (cone) on her to prevent licking. Restrict activity as much as possible. As long as there is no active bleeding, Lilo can likely wait until your veterinarian is available. If there is active bleeding, discharge, lethargy or fever then have her seen at the nearest veterinary ER.
