Why does my dog cough after playing tug of war and growling?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Miniature Schnauzer | Male | neutered | 9 years and 4 months old

I often play tug of war with my miniature schnauzer with one of his toys. It's always somewhat bothered me, however, that after he's pulling and growling profusely, he often stops what he's doing and, opens his mouth wide and lets out one big cough. It's never really worried me because he's a very hyper and jolly dog and would often get right back to play, but I thought it wouldn't hurt to ask. Thanks!

Hello. I would not be too concerned about this because I have observed this in my own pets at times. Sometimes its when they are wrestling with each other or playing tug of war with me. I have always just assumed either a little saliva has inadvertently made its way into the trachea, or the growling dries & irritates the throat. But it seems to be very normal & does not bother them one bit. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
