I gave my 13lb cat the wrong Comfortis dose. Will it kill fleas?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | neutered | 13 lbs

JUST ASKED ABOUT DOSAGE OF COMFORTIS FOR A 13 POUND CAT. MY VET GAVE ME 270MG (6.1 - 12 POUNDS) BUT IT SAYS IT SHOULD BE 590MG FOR A CAT 12.1 - 24.1 POUNDS. I JUST NOTICED THE BOTTLE SAYS RIGHT DOSE AND WAS GIVEN THE LOWER DOSE? I'VE ALREADY GIVEN HIM THE PILL A FEW DAYS AGO. HE IS IN GOOD HEALTH OTHER THAN THE FLEA ALLERGY. HE EATS GRAIN FREE AND IS ALMOST 9 YEARS OLD.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! You are correct- Cody will need the 560mg size. It won’t hurt to give the smaller size but it may not be totally effective. Or you can contact your veterinarian and see if you can switch out the dose for the correct size. Good luck and kisses to Cody!
