What caused my neutered puppy's raw skin and fur loss on his neck?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Male | neutered | 8 months and 13 days old | 165 lbs

Ten days ago, i had my 8-month puppy neutered. Today, I noticed a big dark sticky patch on his neck. When I got home from work and bathed him, I realized he’s missing a 2 inch by 3 inch patch of fur and the dark sticky patch MAY have been blood? The exposed skin is raw, but not bloody. It’s nearly impossible to tell he is missing the hair expect when he bends his neck. What could possibly have caused this? He’s perfectly fine in every other way.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It is hard to tell for sure just based on a picture. However, this is likely a hot spot that has become infected. I highly recommend you take him to your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. They would be able to check for this and start therapy accordingly. If this is what is going on, they could start antibiotics and further therapies. Best of luck!
