Is it normal for my vet to not approve puppy heartworm meds on Chewy?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Rough Collie | Male | unneutered | 3 months and 7 days old | 15 lbs

I have puppy who I am aware will be getting quite large. At his appt this weekend, we got his heartworm/tick meds and he was just under the first weight limit. By next month, he will be in the med’s next weight band so I tried to order a few months worth ahead on Chewy knowing he had an appt in 3 wks and would be weighed before his next dose. Vet called, did not approve script on Chewy, said he needed to come in month to month and buy single doses at their office. Is this normal practice?

Yes, it is quite normal. I would talk to the vet about your desires and see what they can do, since it all vet dependent. We are just wanting to make sure that Baldr gets the correct dose to stay protected!
