How much to feed my 11-week Yorkie puppy? Is free feeding safe?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Yorkshire Terrier | Female | unspayed | 2 months and 14 days old | 2 lbs

11 week old yorkie feeding Royal Canine for puppy, but directions say 1/2 cup when 4 lbs. She is only 2.0 lbs today. How much should I feed? Breeder told me to free feed her, but not sure if that is good. She was 1.7 lbs at last check at vet 2 weeks ago but I think she is 2.1 lbs today (I weighed myself with her) so don't want to be overfeeding, but have free fed until 7 pm. Should I be doing this

Hello. There is absolutely nothing wrong with free feeding a young puppy as this ensures a constant source of calories & energy, especially in a very tiny one. The alternative is to put food down 4 times a day & let Abby eat as much as she likes over a 15 minute period. By the time she is 6 months of age, she should be down to 2 feedings a day to prevent obesity. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
