Is my senior dog constipated? He hasn't pooped in two days.

Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! Constipation in dogs is not common. It is common in cats. Usually when owners think their dogs are constipated they are actually having diarrhea. The few times I've seen true constipation in dogs it's after eating a bone and the stool is hard from bone particles or in intact make dogs with perineal hernias. If it has been several days with out stool I would take Abby to the vet to perform a physical exam, a rectal exam and possibly a belly X-ray. Usually when an animal is constipated they have a decrease appetite, they strain to defecate and sometimes vomit. You can try canned pumpkin 1 tablespoon with each meal. Also try a nice long walk to get things moving. I hope this helps. Good luck!

As long as your poodle is eating, drinking, and playing normally, I would not be concerned yet. In fact, many older animals don’t have as many bowel movements daily as younger dogs do. I have even heard situations about completely normal animals not defecating for an entire week. But, If your pet has not defecated in another 48 hours, you may want to call the veterinarian just to see if they will prescribe a laxative or a fiber supplement to help the bowel movements along. If your dog, however, starts to feel lethargic or if they do not eat as much as they normally do, I encourage you to contact the veterinarian sooner than the 48 hour waiting period. Hello! This is a great question. Yes it can be completely normal to skip a day of pooping. This happens with humans sometimes as well. Since Romeo pooped twice yesterday, he may not have to poop today. You would know if he was constipated if he didn't poop for a few days, had pebble-like stool that was hard, was straining to poop with very little coming out, and appeared to be in discomfort. Since he seems fine, I do not think he's constipated and I would not worry. I hope this helps!

Typically after dogs have diarrhea they will not defecate for a few days. If he is straining to go or he still has diarrhea I would recommend a veterinarian. It is never a bad idea to take Moko in to have the veterinarian perform a rectal and make sure there is no cause for concern but it is fine to wait another day. Your veterinarian can check his stool sample for intestinal parasites, dispense a prescription bland diet and even medication to help with his diarrhea. Excellent question. Some pets can go 48 hours before they have a bowel movement and this can be completely normal, as long as you don't notice your dog straining to defecate. If you see your pet straining to defecate, that can indicate your pet is constipated, and he should then be seen by your veterinarian as soon as possible to relieve this issue. Hello and welcome to Boop by Petco. Not pooping for 4 days can be due to constipation, or could be due to not having any poop to poop out. Has she been eating well? Also, if constipation is the problem, usually there is an underlying cause, including kidney disease, diabetes, or other conditions that cause dehydration. If she isn't eating well, or if she is either not drinking, OR drinking and peeing A LOT, then I would have her seen by a vet for some blood tests to check for underlying disease. If her bloodwork is normal, an x-ray can show the extent of constipation if it is present, and a repeat and more extensive enema might be required. Hi there and thanks for your post! Dogs should defecate at least once every day. If it has been 1 and 1/2 days since Luna's last bowel movement but is still eating and drinking normally, she may be a little constipated. You can try adding a tablespoon or two of plain canned pumpkin to her food twice daily for an extra fiber boost to help move things along. If that doesn't help, I would recommend Luna sees her veterinarian to rule out other causes of constipation such as a parasitic infection or other cause. This can be normal if for example he had not eaten in several days before he restarted eating or he is or he was on medications for diarrhea which can then result in constipation in some cases. I recommend you add 1 teaspoon of canned pumpkin to his meals which can help with mild cases of constipation. Good luck and have a good one!

That's nothing to be overly concerned about. Mickey will go soon especially if he's eating normally. I recommend taking him out in the yard frequently and going for short walks as this will stimulate the intestinal tract.
