My dog has a smooth, discolored spot under his nose. What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua (Smooth Coat) | Male | neutered | 1 year and 1 month old | 6 lbs

A mark under my dogs nose appeared on Sunday. It doesn’t seem to be causing him any discomfort or annoyance but I can’t work out where it’s from/what it is. He hasn’t been outside, he does play fight with his sister. The mark is smooth, more of a discolouring than anything else. Do you know what it could be/how I can treat it?

Hello, I'm not sure if there was supposed to be a photo but one is not attached (which is ok). Its hard to say with out a photo. Typically lesions described like this are abrasions, ringworm (which humans can get) or an area where they rubbed the nose. Certainly, protect it from any further rubbing by having him wear and elizabethan collar. Monitor the area daily for any signs that it's getting worse. Otherwise you may watch it for a week. If it gets worse, or doesn't get better, have him examined by the veterinarian (although certainly you could get this done earlier if you like). Most healthy dogs should be able to heal minor wounds unassisted. I hope this helps.
