Why is my Chihuahua biting and attacking her tail until it bleeds?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua (Smooth Coat) | Female | unspayed | 4 lbs

My dog is a chihuahua and she bites her tail. And by that I mean it's like she hates it. She attacks her tail whenever someone touches it or even moves the blankets or pillows from in front or behind her and when she stops she goes and licks it. Sometimes it gets so bad that she makes it bleed a bit and I want help

I would recommend that you have Princess examined by a vet. This type of issue can have many possible causes, including allergies, old injuries to the tail or spine, blood flow issues, anxiety, among a few others. An examination and x-rays are indicated to rule out trauma. Depending on the suspected cause, the vet may recommend medications for anxiety or pain or infection.
