My dog uses a doggy door but still pees inside. How to stop it?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 2 years and 7 months old | 13 lbs

I adopted a year old Maltese mix male a year ago. He came from an animal hoarder. He uses a doggy door, but also has accidents in house on rug in foyer, on two of his beds, & the wooden floor in foyer. How can I get him to go potty outside ONLY? I adopted a 5 year old abused Bichon Frise 10 months ago, & she had had NO accidents since learning to use the doggy door. Yesterday they came in from groomer. Female went out to pee. Male went to his bed & peed on it right in front of us!

This may be a difficult situation to remedy and it is possible that Benny may never be truly trust worthy in the house. Your best option to start is to begin crate training. Here is a great link: https://www.petcoach.co/article/how-to-crate-train-your-dog/ You must eliminate the opportunity to have accidents and crate training is the best way to do so. I hope this helps.
