Does CBD oil for cats affect their vision or cause eye problems?

Hello, there are very minimal studies on CBD oil and its effect on cats or dogs. Side effects have not been fully obtained and it could be possible that the CBD oil may cause these. However, other things that could be associated with his signs include neurologic diseases and heart diseases. Because of his age, I would be most suspicious of a neurologic disease or a side effect from the CBD oil or other medications he may be on. Given his clinical signs which you are describing, I would be concerned with his over all health and ability to eat, drink and use the bathroom. If you think he is unable to perform any of these adequately then he should be seen by your veterinarian today or in the morning if he otherwise seems stable to you. Monitor for any stumbling, falling to the side, abnormal fast eye movement, head tilt, shaking his head or scratching his ears and contact your veterinarian if you note any of these. As of yet, we have very little research on CBD oil in veterinary patients, so we cannot make any recommendations one way or the other about this product - we do not know what an appropriate dose might be, and if there are any potential health concerns or drug interactions in cats. In addition, because it's a schedule 1 drug, it's illegal for us to prescribe or recommend.

There is very limited research on CBD oil concerning pets so far and therefore I would be reluctant to use it on my pets. I suggest waiting until there is more research and proof of beneficial effects as well as research on long-term effects.

I can certainly understand your frustration. I would highly recommend not putting CBD oil in your cats ear however. If the eardrum is still ruptured, then nothing but sterile saline should be introduced inside the ear, because anything else can negatively affect her nervous system (balance, coordination, etc). Also there is no evidence that CBD oil will do anything for an ear infection unfortunately. However, I think you should get additional testing done if your kitty isn't doing better. If an inner ear infection is present, this will be evident by a physical otoscopic exam of the ear, to confirm a ruptured ear drum, and a skull radiograph to detect fluid build-up in the inner ear. If an inner ear infection is present then oral antibiotcs, and sterile saline topically, should be able to resolve the infection. When using CBD oil products, there is not much research out there that backs any claims at the moment. What we currently have on the market is so variable in strength and the claims are so vast on what it treats. With any CBD oil product, I always caution owners to use them at their own risk. These could have unwanted side effects. I would only use straight CBD oil and not products that contain THC as THC can be toxic to animals. I would speak with the oncologist first and discuss treatment options and ask about CBD products then. I hope this helps!

We just don’t have much data on CBD oil and safety in pets right now. All I can say is use it cautiously if you desire and choose a product marketed for pets. If you see any abnormal symptoms at all take Cafe to the vet for evaluation. I would also discuss her old dog issues with the vet to make sure she is on any necessary medications or supplements.

Hi. Yes it could hurt to touch more then a normal kitty. This is definitely something to run by the veterinarian that diagnosed her. CBD oil still has a lot of research on safety that needs to be done before we would recommend it. Hello. You do not have anything to worry about after giving Gizmo 3 drops. This is a very small amount. But I would not give him anymore since we also do not know truly how cats respond to CBD oil. For anxiety, I would first invest in a couple of Feliway room diffusers that emit a compound called a pheromone. This has shown to calm kitties & help them adjust to new situations. We, as a profession, have yet to fully embrace medical marijuana for a variety of reasons including toxicity, lack of data to support benefits, dosing and side effects, and legalities associated with prescribing and dispensing the drug (at this time we cannot legally prescribe CBD oil). Hi there, I always recommend trialing the sedation with a quick drive around the neighborhood before the big day to ensure that the kitty is calm enough. CBD is being studied for pets right now, but the hard data for recommending dosages isn't available yet. As well, many CBD advertised products will have enough THC to cause toxicity in pets, so I do caution to monitor closely and not give large amounts of a product you are unfamiliar with. I cannot think of a reason that a missing eye would interfere with mild sedation but I don't have the whole medical record either.
