My dog has bloody snot, x-rays and blood work clear. What now?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 10 years and 5 months old | 55 lbs

My dog has a lot of snot and a little blood coming out of his nose. I had xrays and blood work come back all clear for him. The vet asked if I wanted to proceed with a procedure where they scope his nose. If there is cancer it would show in an X-ray or blood work? Could it just be a cold?

Poor Tersk! Nasal discharge with blood is always very concerning in dogs, and is not likely to be due to a simple cold. I would be concerned about a possible nasal tumor, a fungal infection, or even a foreign body such as a foxtail or a blade of grass stuck in the nasal cavity. These problems generally do not show up on x-rays or blood work, so I agree with your veterinarian - rhinoscopy would be the next step to try and get a diagnosis.
