My dog ate raw beef, vomited, and is tired. Should I be worried?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Pointer | Male | neutered | 2 years and 5 months old | 70 lbs

My 75lb dog ate a lot of raw ground beef last night, he threw it all up a few hours later. This morning I couldn’t get him to eat his food. At lunch he was lethargic. I fed him a mix of rice, ground turkey, carrots, corn, & sweet potatoes. It took urging but I got him to eat the whole thing. I came back home from work a few hours later and he’s clearly in better spirits, he was willing to play and took a treat from me but he’s still very tired. Should I be worried?

Hello, sorry to hear about Hudson. Indeed, dietary indiscretions like eating raw ground beef can cause the signs you witnessed. Most often this is self limiting and a bland diet for the next 3-5 days should allow his GI tract to rest. You can offer a bland diet and observe him at home, if his vomiting continues or gets worse, he becomes more lethargic, or develops other signs such as diarrhea then he should be evaluated by his veterinarian. A bland diet may consist of plain white rice, skinless and boneless boiled chicken, and cottage cheese low fat. Hope this helps and best of luck.

Poor Hudson sounds like he may be sick. I'd try feeding him a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts. If this helps, slowly add back in his normal diet after a couple of days on the bland diet. Should he refuse to eat the bland diet, vomits the bland diet, his poop continues to have mucous in it, he develops diarrhea, or becomes very lethargic, take him into a vet immediately. Best of luck.
