My puppy pees inside a lot. Is it a medical problem or training?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Male | unneutered | 5 months and 6 days old | 39 lbs

Hi! My puppy pees a lot. I was told he should be able to hold it for the night but wakes up at 6 am to pee and we go to bed late. Also he only pees inside the apartment, never outside. Doesn't show any signs when he's about to pee, just does it. He doesn't seem to be in pain while peeing, but could it be a medical problem or should I just take him straight to a trainer before it gets worse.

At his age, Sombra should be able to hold the urine 6 hours. However, needing to pee as soon as he wakes up is normal regardless of how long he slept. Most pets will gradually be able to hold the urine and sleep longer as they mature. It's worthwhile to have Sombra examined by the veterinarian to check for a urinary tract infection as this can cause sudden urination as well. Lastly, if you are not already doing so, try crate training. Here is a great link: https://www.petcoach.co/article/how-to-crate-train-your-dog/ I hope this helps.
