My dog has pancreatitis. How long until she starts feeling better?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Female | spayed | 11 years and 11 months old

Female dog, 13 years old was diagnosed with acute pancreatitis. Took her in yesterday because she was vomiting and generally acting lethargic. Vet did xray & blood test which showed high ALP liver vibes. Said I should bring her back in the morning for an ultrasound overnight she got worse, wasnt moving much or eating. Shes now in vet on IV cause they saw the pancreatitis on ultrasound. Went to visit it's been 6hrs she still doesnt look great how long before she should be showing an improvement?

Hello, sorry to hear about Lichi. Dogs affected with pancreatitis will respond differently to medical management. Some will improve within 24 hours, some will take longer up to 3-5 days to recover. Treatment with pain medications, gastroprotectants, anti-nausea, anti-diarrhea, occasionally appetite stimulants, and even a temporary feeding tube may be necessary and dependent on how Lichi responds to initial treatment. Hope this helps and best of luck.
