My new shelter cat has diarrhea and bloody stool. Should I go to ER?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Female | unspayed | 1 year old | 7 lbs

New cat just brought home from shelter. First BM was diarrhea and she had blood on her anus. Should I take her to emergency vet? My vet can’t get her in until next Tuesday.

Hello, & thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I do not think you need an emergency visit. Libra looks very bright & alert. Is she eating, drinking & acting fairly well? If so, the diarrhea should not be too critical for her over the next few days. The blood is probably just from irritation, so do not worry about that. If your vet cannot get Libra in until Tuesday, ask if you can just drop off a stool sample to check. If intestinal parasites are seen, ask what over the counter worm medicines might be appropriate. You might also start her on a product called Proviable KP made by Nutramax. Some of the bigger pet retailers carry it or you can order it from Amazon. It is basically a pet safe kaopectate with probiotics that can really help with most diarrheas. And thanks for adopting!
