My dog won't eat after steroids. Is it a side effect or serious?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Jack Russell Terrier | Male | neutered | 1 year old

My dog was on steroids for a month for a skin problem. Whilst on them his appetite increased alot. He has been off the steroids coming up to 3 weeks now and his appetite has completely gone. I'm really struggling to get him to eat. Is this a side effect to the steroids still or should I be more concerned?

Yes, you should be concerned. The appetite is expected to return to normal but should not drop below normal. With it being almost 3 weeks since the last steroid, I suspect this decreased appetite is due to another cause. I recommend to have him examined since many many things can make pets not feel like eating. Best of luck.
