My puppy has roundworm. Is my indoor cat at risk of parasites?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Longhair | Female | spayed | 11 months and 24 days old | 6 lbs

Hello! We have a puppy who just started his heartworm regiment. We found out that he has roundworm yesterday and began treating immediately. Is our indoor cat at risk? The puppy has not ever gone #2 in the house, she has had no direct exposure to his stools, and there are no symptoms exhibited by her of having a parasite but I want to be safe. thank you!

As long as Freya has no direct contact with your puppy's stool, she should be fine. A dewormer can be, and likely was, administered by your veterinarian. This should be repeated in 2 weeks and maybe 4 weeks. The heartworm preventive, if it has medication for intestinal parasites, should keep your pup free from worms afterwards as long as you give it every month.
