My dog has soft stool. Could human food be causing her diarrhea?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Russell Terrier | Female | unspayed | 3 years and 4 months old

I notice the last few days Stella has had very soft stool. Is this a symptom of what she is eating? We keep her a food bowl of dry dog food but she also shareswhat I have for my meal. But I’m careful not to let her eat anything that I know is bad for dogs. Any ideas??

I recommend to stop feeding Stella human foods. In general, the only ones that are ok are plain boiled white meat chicken, white or brown rice, apples, bananas, carrots, peas or green beans. This is not an exhaustive list but these are not likely to upset the stomach. The diarrhea could be due to many conditions including something, bacterial over growth, parasites or other even pancreatitis (which is a risk since she eats table food). If the diarrhea has continued beyond 24 hours, I recommend to have her examined by the veterinarian. With continued diarrhea, there are often bacterial shifts in the gut that will make matters worse regardless of the initial cause. Make sure to bring in a sample of fresh stool. The doctor will check her for parasites and bacterial over growth. Many times a bland diet can help and then a slow, gradual introduction to the normal food can be done. A good diet in general is Royal Canin. It is low residue and highly digestible. I hope Stella starts feeling better quickly! Please feel free to post any additional questions!
