My dog is scared of vet. How to treat his allergies without sedation?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | neutered | 2 years and 2 months old | 70 lbs

My dog gets frequent eat and skin infections that usually start from allergies. He will not let us come near him with brushes, towels, wipes, or any kind of bottle (ear spray, dry shampoo). He is aggressive when scared and has to be muzzled at the vet. They gave us trazadone but even the highest dose has little effect. He was a rescue at 4 months old. How can I help him without having to have him completely sedated at the vet?

It is important to remember that some dogs may always react aggressively and are at risk to hurt someone (which no one wants). Your veterinarian knows how to read pet's body language and must take into account the safety of everyone (the pet included). Some pets needs to be sedated and muzzled and there's no other way around it. There are some things you can discuss with your veterinarian and may be able to work out with the clinic if you are committed to trying to make Java less afraid and more willing to allow proper care.
