My dog has glue ear. Is myringotomy surgery needed for hearing loss?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Cavalier King Charles Spaniel | Female | spayed | 6 years and 11 months old | 13 lbs

My dog (Cavalier) is showing signs of loss of hearing. She can no longer hear me when I call her from a distance. My vet has diagnosed "glue ear" and recommending myringotomy in both ears. Is this necessary or even advisable?

This is unfortunately not uncommon in Cavaliers and yes a myringotomy is an appropriate treatment. You could pursue more advanced imaging (a CT or MRI) before surgery to get more comfortable that it's required in Layla's particular case.
