Puppy passing tapeworms after deworming. Is a second dose needed?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Jack Russell Terrier | Female | unspayed | 4 months and 3 days old | 12 lbs

My puppy seems to be expelling long tapeworms 12 days after the vet dewormed her. Is this normal? How long does the dewormer last/take to work? She doesn't have any fleas. Does this mean these worms were passed on from her mother? The picture shown below was prior to the deworming on the 12th of June. These are much smaller than the ones coming out now.

Penny needs a second deworming treatment two weeks after the first to kill all the worms. The first treatment kills the adults present, while the second kills the worms who had not yet hatched from eggs during the first deworming. I would take her back into the vet to get another treatment. Best of luck.
