My 3-week-old puppy won't eat. Is it time to start weaning her?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Pit Bull Terrier | Female | unspayed | 22 days old | 2.6 lbs

Lily is now 23 days old. Took her to vet and he says she looks extremely healthy and all seems well. But twice now she has just stopped eating. First time, it was 23 hours. It's 11pm and she hasn't eaten since 10am. Today she seems extra whiny but only chews and bites bottle nipple. Vet still said she's ok and to bring her back if it's longer than 24hrs. I got her at 1 week old because the mother stopped feeding. She has slept through the night without feeding since I've had her.

You can try weaning Lily onto puppy food, it may be time for her. To help her wean and to get used to dry food, I would soak a high quality puppy formulated dry food in warm water until soft. Then mix that with puppy formula such as KMR to make a mush the consistency of oatmeal. Over the next two weeks, gradually increase the amount of dry puppy food and decrease the amount of water and KMR you use until she is eating the dry puppy food only. I do agree, if she goes 24 hours without eating, have her seen by a vet. Best of luck.
