My dog ate a foam ball. Is it toxic? What are the warning signs?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Golden Retriever | Female | unspayed | 1 year old | 63 lbs

My dog ate part of a foam rubber ball yesterday. She struggled just now with a bowel movement but was ultimately quite productive. No change in appetite. Has been eating well with no side effects or nausea. I’m thinking anything she ate will pass ( though no evidence yet). Concerned about the ball though. Is there anything toxic? Any warning signs we should be watching for?

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question. It is concerning Winnie ate the foam ball, but it's good she's acting normally. Keep an eye out for vomiting, diarrhea, anorexia, lethargy, or an inability to pass feces. If you see any of those signs, then have her seen by a vet immediately. She is a big dog, and this may pass without problem. I'd watch her closely over the next 72 hours. I hope this helps!
