My 9-year-old dog is losing weight, weak, and eating poop. Why?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | unspayed | 60 lbs

I have a 9 year old female chow/collie mix that's acting funny lately. She's lost weight, is eating poop, is weak and semi lethargic. Not on heartworm meds or flea meds but there aren't many fleas right now. We do have rats outside, mosquitos and biting flies. There's a power struggle between her and another female dog but until recently she's been alpha. Utd on rabies and received a full round of puppy shots. Been going on for about a month with most of the weight loss in the last two weeks.

Maggie needs to be examined by the veterinarian. Weight loss generally indicates a disease process and that could be many things ranging from a heavy parasite burden to cancer. At nine years old Maggie is considered a senior citizen so disease processes become more likely. Take in a sample of the feces for testing and she will likely need some bloodwork as well. Many diseases have better responses, and an easier treatment if they are caught early so time is important. Have her examined within the next 24 hours. Best of luck.
