Is it safe to feed my pigeon boiled rice or other human foods?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Bird | Unknown - Bird | Female

Hi. Can we feed pigeon boiled rice ? Is it safe? My pigeon has much more desire for cooked rice. So we feed her daily. Is it safe? She loves boiled rice. But I don't know whether it's safe or not. Can we feed human foods? Iam asking this because whenever I eat my food, she comes and ask my food. Is it safe to feed pigeon human foods ? Please let me know. Thank you.

Thanks for reaching out. Rice is a carbohydrate and has little nutritional value and can lead to obesity. The carbohydrate could lead to intestinal bacterial overgrowth. A little should be okay but should not be offered much. Good luck.

VCA Animal hospitals have a great article on a variety of foods (including people foods) you can offer your pigeon. While it won't be the same as a balanced pelleted diet, it can help you decide what to feed Sheephony that is safe and nutritious until you can get back to her regular diet: https://vcahospitals.com/know-your-pet/pigeons-and-doves-feeding
